Recommendation for Soldiers

At the University of St.Gallen it is not possible to complete military basic training in summer and then begin one's study at Assessment Level mid-term! A deferral of basic training till after bachelor graduation is generally prohibited. How to decide as a student-to-be?

Model without fractionation

The easiest solution is to either complete military basic training before beginning of studies or during the second bachelor term (colored grey in above picture). During said period you can enroll in a holiday term and resume your studies collision-free with the following term.

Is your military basic training already scheduled differently? Please submit a request for deferral for service.

Model With Interruption of Training

Possible if not recommended is the splitting of military basic training in two parts. You would have to follow the solution exactly as shown below, deferring exams of the second bachelor term to January of the following year:

With this solution you incur the service compensation tax and certain handicaps (yellow in the picture above). The following provisions have to be taken:

1. Notify us as soon as possible, so we can coordinate your study start (mandatory starting week). Otherwise you can not begin at the University of St.Gallen!
2. Request the splitting (technically: shift the "VBA1" to the summer after your second bachelor term).
3. Note that the exam block in January after your third bachelor term will carry a very high exam load. Any further deferral of the VBA1 is not possible!
